Hankins Construction served as General Contractor for the Lift for Life Academy Elementary School Storm Shelter Addition, a critical life-safety improvement to the active elementary school campus.
The project included construction of an ICC 500–compliant tornado storm shelter integrated into the existing building, designed to provide safe refuge for students and staff during severe weather while functioning as multipurpose space during daily use. The scope featured reinforced structural systems, storm-rated doors and glazing, and life-safety assemblies meeting FEMA and ICC 500 requirements.
Work was carefully phased to minimize disruption to school operations. Hankins collaborated closely with the owner and design team to coordinate logistics, inspections, and sequencing unique to storm shelter construction.
